Brezno rumenega maka (P4) – Infinitum

In the middle of September out photo team set out to photograph lower parts of the cave “Brezno rumenega maka”, known also as P4. This more than 1000 m deep cave is located on Kanin plateau in Slovenia and it has been recently connected to 1322 m deep cave “Renetovo brezno”. Our photo expedition should have been accomplished already in the summer, but the weather and some logistic problems forced us to move it to September. Our plan was to spend three days in the cave while taking pictures of the cave below -650 m. So we started on sunny Saturday by taking the Kanin cable-way to the plateau. We had quite a luck with weather, because it was nice forecast for that weekend and also all the previous week was dry, which turned out to be very good in the wet parts of the cave. But we were even more lucky, because it turned out, that it was the last weekend that cable-way operated before long maintenance period. We passed the cavers bivouac near the entrance where we collected food, brought here in the summer. Beki and Jure were first to enter the cave, because they had to get to the camp at -950 m that day and on the way do some re-rigging. Matija, Mateja, Nika and Uroš followed soon. Our goal for the day was to reach the camp at -650 m and to re-take some photos, that did not turn out so well last year. Next day we started shooting right below the camp where 220 m deep shaft “Odmev temine” (Echo of the darkness) starts. At first one has to descend muddy slope with awkward re-belays, located on the ceiling.

Somewhat lower the shaft starts to open and somewhere on the left one can imagine continuation in the deep. After crossing a ledge, littered with loose stones, one finds himself about 140 m above the shaft’s bottom, which is barely recognisable even with the brightest of lights.

We took photos on several locations. The name of the shaft – Echo of the darkness – really fits! To communicate with yelling is nearly impossible because of strong echo and great distance between re-belay stations. Luckily we were told about that by our colleagues and we used walkie-talkies to communicate.

At the bottom of the shaft we decided to quickly continue through the wet and most unpleasant part of the cave, because our friends at the bottom of the cave were already expecting us. Luckily there was not much water at the time, so we reached the great hall called “Infinitum”, where Beki and Jure waited for us, without any problems.

The dimensions of this hall really seems infinite – hence the name of the hall, which is probably one of the largest halls in known underground world of Kanin mountains. It is 100 m long and 50 m high. From there cave continues in several directions – towards “Renetovo brezno”, towards fossil galleries leading in the direction of “Mala Boka” cave and to recently found water canyon below. We photographed Infinitum, but the other parts of the cave will have to wait until some other time, because it was already too late. On the way up we had to endure a little shower, but we still managed to take a picture of the shaft “Odmev temine” from bottom up. In the next morning our two colleagues, that slept in the bottom camp came to us and quickly went on, because they needed to get home the same day. After clearing the camp, we too started towards the surface. It was dark, when we came out and we stayed in cavers bivouac until next morning when we returned home.
