Renejevo brezno – spodnji deli / lower parts

Opremljanje in širjenje Povezave sta prevzela Lojze in Vid.

Zgodaj popoldne naslednjega dne smo v Renejevo brezno vstopili člani foto ekipe Jaka, Klemen, Nika in Uroš. Do bivaka P’r Gabrčku na -700 m smo prišli precej hitro in tam prespali. Naslednjega dne smo začeli s fotografiranjem.

Our previous expedition to P4 was great success, so we started to think about new photo expedition, that would cover not yet photographed parts of cave Renejevo brezno (Renee’s Abyss) from bivouac P’r Gabrčku (-700 m) all the way down to Copacabana (beach at the final sump at -1240 m). During the last summer our club discovered a connection between Renejevo brezno and P4, so we decided that photo team would enter through Renejevo brezno and photo-document missing parts of the cave down to connection with P4 and then exit the system through P4. Everything should last for five days and should be carried out within the framework of a larger research expedition during the Christmas holidays. However, some logistics problems had to be solved before. The connection between Renejevo brezno and P4 has not yet been fully rigged. It also turned out that some squeezes on the Connection have proven to be too narrow for me. Lojze and Vid volunteered to rig and enlarge the passages. Also Renejevo brezno needed some re-rigging, which was taken over by our friends Rok, Mitja and Ambrož.

On Thursday, December, 26th Kanin cableway took us to the D station. Despite very heavy backpacks we managed to the Cavers’ bivouac near the cave entrance. Surface team helped us to carry all the equipment. Photo team Jaka, Klemen, Nika and me entered the cave Renejevo brezno next day in the early afternoon. We were quickly at the bivouac P’r Gabrčku (-700 m), where we slept. Next day we started photographing the cave.

Cave Renejevo brezno below the first bivouac becomes much more complicated and also physically more exhaustive. One just “falls” 700 meters to the bivouac through the system of pits that is interrupted by just one short squeeze. Lower down pits start to interchange with fossil passages, full of mud.

Še dve brezni in prišli smo do horizontalnega vodnega toka imenovanega Kolektor (-1160 m).

At one point we thought we were already at the notorious squeeze Binina špranjca (Bina’s slit), but there was still much work to actually get there. Squeeze Špranjca justified its reputation – to get through it took me a lot of swearing. Another two pits and at -1160 meters we got to horizontal water stream called Kaliktar (word play meaning collector).

Pot skozi navaljeno skalovje metrskih dimenzij sta naša vodnika Jaka in Klemen brez večjih težav našla. Nato je sledila še zadnja težava – nizek prehod tik nad vodo, ki pa nam zaradi nizkega vodostaja ni delal večjih težav.

Soon we stopped to have a snack, which somewhat refilled our depleted strength. After snack we continued to take photos in the collector. Maximum width of the collector here is about 2 to 3 meters, but most of the time one have to climb over and under big rocks that block the passage. One of the biggest breakdowns is called Minotavrov skalnjak (Minotaur’s rock garden). Our guides Jaka and Klemem found the way through the maze of huge rocks without any problems. After that we had to overcome the last problem – passage above the water with a very low ceiling. Fortunately low water level made this quite easy.

That night we slept at bivouac Golobnjak (Pigeon house) some 90 meters above the collector. On the third day we planned to photograph Copacabana (-1240 m) – sandy beach of the final sump – and the remaining part of the collector. Because we went to bed late last night and because we were still tired from the previous day, we did not get up until eleven. After breakfast we descended back to the collector. After about twenty minutes of climbing the giant boulders, the space opened up, and deep below, we caught a glimpse of Copacabana.

To daje celotnemu prostoru dodatno perspektivo.

Copacabana is really impressive. The space itself is slightly smaller than the Infinitum in P4 and slopes obliquely toward the lake of Matt Sump at the same angle as the rock layers. This gives the whole space an additional perspective. The rocks are quite dark because of the water, and the cracks are often filled with fine sand. After a two-hour photo shoot, we had a snack on the beach and then started to return towards the bivouac. We took some more pictures along the way.

The next day we made our way through the connection between Renejevo brezno and P4. The passages through the connection are quite muddy and not too aesthetic, but we also took some photos here as we wanted to document the entire cave as much as possible. We also recorded the official opening ceremony of the Connection. We continued on to the bivouac at Infinitum, where we met a team that worked in that part of the cave. We heard a brief report of the new discoveries and then regrouped. So Esther, David, Nika and I went to Huston, and the rest of the team slept in the Infinitum.

On the last day of the expedition, we headed towards the surface. Nika was fast forward, and Ester, David and I followed slowly after her. Somewhere halfway there were other Infinitum team members overtaking us. We got out when it was already dark. The last day of the expedition was also the last day of 2019, and despite the efforts of the past days, we celebrated late into the night. The next day we returned to the valley by cable way.

Without the sacrifies of the photo team I would not be able to take these photos. The same applies to all support teams that have rigged and enlarged the Connection, re-rigged cave Renejevo brezno and help to carry the equipment. Photo expedition would have been much harder to do without the help of Sončni Kanin Company, which helped us to transport our team and equipment. We are also grateful to all those who maintain and care for the cavers bivouac on Kanin.
